“Forest School is a child-centred inspirational learning process, that offers opportunities for holistic growth. It supports play, exploration and supported risk taking to help develop confidence and self esteem through learner inspired, hands on experience". (Forest School Association)
Forest schools are nature based communities where trained practitioners nurture learner led exploration and discovery. In developing a sense of community we nurture the children to collaborate and embrace challenge so that over time the children’s character, resilience and empathy can blossom.
We have our own site in a privately owned piece of woodland (opposite preschool) which we visit weekly. By visiting the same site regularly our children have the opportunity to learn about the natural environment, to learn how to handle risks and most importantly to us their own initiative to solve problems and cooperate alongside their peers. Forest school sessions run throughout the school year , going to site in all weathers (except for high winds or thunder/lightening).
Forest school sessions currently run on a Thursday morning. We walk up from our meeting point and at this point we start the session with activities and singing on our way to the woodland.
While at forest school the children can take part in planned activities if they would like too. These activities can include natural art and crafts, making shelters, weaving, scavenger hunts, using tools safely, fire safety and cooking, The activities will be planned based on the children’s interests as well as extending their learning through observations that have been made during their activities and play.
Alongside these activities we also have swings, dens, bug hunting resources, a mud and water area, musical washing lines and just letting the children explore and develop their imagination skills with the natural resources they can find in the woods. What will a tree log be today.... a see saw, a fire engine or even a fairy home!
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
